e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette in NYC Review + Swatches

From e.l.f.'s website

I'm super nostalgic about this palette. It was my first eyeshadow palette. Before this I only used two colors from Aveda (a buttery ivory and dark brown), along with a Wet n Wild gold eyeshadow single and Revlon gold shadow link (I had a thing for gold).

This palette, as some of you may already know, is a dupe for a Sephora palette that costs quite a bit more. I don't own the Sephora one, so I can't compare, but I will be reviewing this palette for quality. Don't let me get too sappy about it.

Description from e.l.f.'s website:
Each Baked Palette features 10 gorgeous baked eyeshadows so you can achieve a flawless look whenever, wherever. The silky and blendable formula of our Baked Eyeshadow provides smooth and even application with each sweep of color. Baked in an oven, these eyeshadows offer rich pigmentation for a beautiful effect. Infused with active key ingredients Jojoba, Rose, Sunflower, Apricot and Grape to nourish and hydrate the skin. The long-lasting and shimmering color can be worn wet for a vibrant effect or dry for sheer pigmentation, offering a variety of gorgeous eye looks!
Ingredients list from e.l.f.'s website:
Mica, Talc, Bismuth Oxychloride, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Paraffinum Liquidum (mineral oil), Dimethicone, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Fruit Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491 , CI 77492 , CI 77499), Ultramarine Violet (CI 77077), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), Yellow No.5 Lake (CI 19140), Red No.40 Lake (CI 16035), Blue No.1 Lake (CI 42090).

These shadows, first off, are super fall-out-y. Not on your eyes if you apply them with patting motions, but the palette with just a few uses will look like you've owned it for years and were rough with it. This doesn't necessarily dissuade me from buying more, since I don't so much care about how products look (oh who am I kidding, I bought the Balm's How Bout Them Apples just for the packaging).

All of these colors are baked so there are no mattes in this palette. One of the shadows comes close, but is still not quite matte.

These shadows can be used wet or dry which can come in handy with getting more pigmented pops of color. Depending on the look you're going for you can use a primer or no, but keep in mind that if you don't you are just setting yourself up for a day full of fading and creasing.

Top 5 colors
Let's call the top half of this palette A, and number the shades 1-5 from left to right.

A1 is a rosy shimmery metallic pink. I find it very similar to Maybelline's Inked in Pink.

A2 is a peachy shimmery metallic copper. It's not quite penny-esque, but more like brand new copper pipe.

A3 is a shimmery metallic buttermilk. It is decidedly yellow-toned and just off-white, making it a great color for inner highlights, browbone highlights, or cheekbone highlights.

A4 is a muted caramel-leaning shimmery metallic gold color. It reminds me of caramel corn.

A5 is a light shimmery metallic silver. It is very similar to A3, but more blue-toned than yellow-toned.

Overall, A is chock full of shimmery metallics. This is obviously the lighter half of the palette, to be used for highlights or main colors while the bottom half is for definition or smokier looks.

Bottom 5 colors
Numbering this in the same way as A, this is the bottom half B.

B1 is a satin black with small pink glitter. The glitter is so minimal it is almost nonexistent, but if you look closely you can see that it is nonetheless there.

B2 is a burnt dark warm-toned satin brown. I like this color because it is the lightest of the darker colors, making it a great subtle definition color.

B3 is a cool-toned pewter gray that straddles the line between satin and metallic.

B4 is a cool-toned dark satin brown. It is similar to B2, but darker and cooler.

B5 is an intense cobalt blue that, like B3, is not quite metallic nor satin. This is my favorite color of this palette, but unfortunately it doesn't show up much without a primer. Depending on the primer you use, the color comes out differently. Using one of BH Cosmetics' now discontinued eye primers the color is very dark and not as intense as the picture below shows. With Urban Decay's Primer Potion in Original it looks very similar to BH's swatch, but obviously more pigmented. With NYX's Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk it is a true, intense cobalt, just as it looks below.

CONCLUSION

I really like this palette! It's great as a first-timer palette, and I would know. I like that you can create a wide variety of looks from all the colors. Using A3, A2/A4, and B2 you can create a very pretty neutral eye. Using B1, B3, and B5 you can make an intense smokey eye with a bold pop of color. Just in time for summer in the northern hemisphere, you can use A1, A2, and A3 for a cute pinky-gold eye.

Like all e.l.f. products, this palette is very affordable at only $10. If you like this palette there are three other versions that you can also buy, and I will do reviews on those all in the future.
